COAST & RIVER SURVEYS

Coast Surveys

We have been working with the Environment Agency and their partners monitoring coastal erosion and deposition since 1991 in areas as diverse as East Anglia, Dorset, Cornwall and much of Wales. We are experienced in collecting cross sectional data and complete grid data of many different beach environments.

Accurate position and level data has traditionally been collected by GNSS (GPS), either on foot or mounted on an ATV. This method is still used for most profile surveys but where grid data is required we also collect data using drones fitted with cameras or LiDAR to produce a point cloud with GNSS ground control and ground truthing points for error checking.

We also carry out detailed surveys of sea defence structures. Deliverables include bespoke text files, SANDS data format, photographs, ortho-rectified photography and point clouds.

River Surveys

At EDI we have over 40 years’ experience in surveying watercourse channels and floodplains. The majority of channel surveys consist of cross sections at set intervals, detailed elevations of structures with their associated channel profiles, a long section showing both bank levels, hard and soft bed levels, water level and structure details and digital data in one or more river modelling formats, e.g. EACSD, Hec-Ras, ISIS or MIKE11.

We also carry out:

  • Flow control, flood storage and gauging structure surveys – a detailed record of the exact layout and levels of structures is essential to enable accurate measurement of flow data, storage volumes and trigger levels.
  • Threshold (doorstep) level surveys – the collection of accurate level data using a digital level for properties in areas that may be at risk of flooding. We can collect levels on air bricks, DPC’s, external ground level and lowest window sill level.
  • Fluvial structure monitoring – we will normally establish stable off site monitoring datums and attach monitoring targets to the structure that will move with it – these are then measured at intervals set according to the expected movement and the criticality of the structure.
  • Flood risk assessment surveys – we can provide a detailed level or topographic survey for any site with levels which will be acceptable to the Environment Agency and other public bodies.
  • Hydrographic surveys of rivers, canals or lakes using either manual means or an echo sounder mounted either on a boat or remote control survey boat, in conjunction with either a total station or GNSS to coordinate its location.
