3D LASER SCANNING
As the name suggests this scanner uses an eye safe laser to collect millions of 3D data points to represent the surface of physical objects in the form of a point cloud. It is a fast, accurate and safe way of collecting of collecting a huge amount of information.
By combining this data with the photographic record collected by the on-board camera it is possible to have a true colour representation of the object being scanned. As this is a permanent record of all the features in the site area at the time of survey it is ideal for customers who are not sure of all their requirements at the outset as it is easy to revisit the data set and extract additional information without revisiting the site – saving both time and money.
The laser is line of sight and reflects off the first surface it encounters in a near 360° sphere around the scanner location. After each scan the scanner is moved to a location which has a significant overlap with the previous location and from which any surfaces which would have been obstructed from the previous location can now be scanned.
On completion of the scan the software identifies the overlap with the previous scan and registers the point clouds in to one continuous model. This process continues until the whole building or structure has been covered. Targets or other distinct features within the point cloud can be coordinated to geo-reference the point cloud to Ordnance Survey national grid or any local site grid.
It is ideal for surveying buildings both internally and externally but has many other uses such as bridge, cliff, pipework, tunnel and highway surveys. It is especially useful where physical access is difficult or impossible.
We can provide colourised point clouds, 2D and 3D CAD plans and 3D Revit models.
