Environmental Agency Work
Coastal Surveying
Description: Having worked with the EA since (1990) we have build up a wealth of experience in coastal, estuary and inland water course surveying.
Every six months we track the levels of coastal erosion along almost (400km) of East Anglian coast line.
After setting up GPS reference points which give us a known point in world coordinates we walk along bearings that go from up to 2Km inland to the low water tide mark. Using portable roving GPS units we take recordings of the locations position, height and ground covering type (i.e. grass, mud, sand etc) every few paces. Once back in the office the collected data is processed by software to create cross sections of the coast line. When this new data is laid over cross sections of the same coast line collected from previous years we can see a graphical representation of how our coastline is changing over time. This valuable information gives the Environment Agency much needed data to create the defence polices needed to protect us from the risk of flooding and erosion.
River surveying
Description: Using our rib with its four stroke outboard motor we have utilised both GPS and sonar depth reading equipment to map the cross sections of rivers including its flood plains. Monitoring river course changes and siltation levels is essential in the fight to manage our flood defences at a time of increasing weather change.
